REDUCING THE RISK OF SIDS

  • Place your baby on the back to sleep, Allow your baby to have supervised awake time on the tummy to promote infant development.
  • Stop smoking while pregnant or around your baby.
  • Use firm, flat bedding. Keep soft toys, pillows and fluffy blanket out of baby's bed.
  • Use the feet to foot method. When putting baby in crib places the baby's feet against the foot of the crib.  If you must use a blanket, please make sure it is crochet and tucked in around the side of the baby.
  • Avoid overheating your baby. Dress your baby in as much or as little as you would wear.  Do not wrap your baby in lots of blankets or clothes.  If your baby is sweating, has damp hair, or a heat rash, he or she may be too hot, in too warm of a room.  These may increase the risk, particulary if the baby is ill
  • Maintain good prenatal care. While pregnant do not smoke, use drugs or alcohol.
  • Breast Feed your baby. Breast feeding has been shown to be good for your baby.  Benefits include building up baby's immunity against illness and infections.
